Four suspects including Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandra-pushpa Vidana-pathirana who was found guilty of murdering British National Khuram Shaik and gang raping his girl friend were sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment today.

Colombo High Court Judge Rohini Walgama passed separate jail terms of each count and ordered the suspects to pay compensation to victim Victoria Alexandra.

The other three accused in the case who were jailed today are Lahiru Kelulm, Saman Deshapriya and Prageeth Chathuranga.

Two other suspects of the case were acquitted as there were no sufficient evidence produced against them before the court.

Delivering the verdict, High Court Judge Rohini Walgama said the allegations by certain media that the hearing of the case was delayed are proved false with today’s verdict.

The Judge also stated it is a historical victory to conclude the case within a short time of about three and a half months.

She said more than the two parties of the case, she had to confront many challenges during the trial.

Judge Walgama said she was guided by her conscience to give this verdict base on the evidences produced before the court.

She said she considered it was a duty entrusted on her by the god and asked the respondents to question from their heart whether they are guilty of the crime before appealing against the judgment.

However lawyer appeared for the suspects U.R. de Silva said that he would appeal against the High Court verdict.

Meanwhile Police and Prison Guards tried to prevent the  media taking photo coverage of former Tangalle PS chairman while he was taken to back to Prison.

4 suspects including Tangalle PS chairman jailed for 20 years

Four suspects of Tangalle murder case including Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana were sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court today.

In addition, Colombo High Court Judge Rohini Walgama ordered the suspects to pay 12 million rupees compensation to ganged raped Russian victim Victoria Alexandra.

One of the controversial cases in the country, the murder of British national Khuram Sheik and ganged raping of his girlfriend Russian national Victoria Alexandra was heard for nearly two years.

The incident took place at a Tangalle resort on the 25th of December 2011, and the High Court Judge acquitted two suspects of the case.

The suspects were indicted for 17 charges apart from murder and ganged rape.

Among the other charges are illegal assembly, damaging hotel property, robbing of its liquor and possessing illegal weapons.

Victoria Alexandra and her family members, Russian Embassy officials, British High Commission officials and the relatives of the suspects were present in court to hear the verdict today.

However lawyer appeared for the suspects U.R. de Silva said that he would appeal against the High Court verdict.

The Colombo High Court sentenced the Tangalle Pradeshya Saba Chairman Vidanapathirana and 3 others for 20 years of rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty of Kuram Sheik's murder.

Verdict of Tangalle case today.

Colombo Chief High Court Judge Rohini Walgama stated that the verdict of the controversial Tangalle case that was heard for nearly 2 and a half years will be issued today.

This was stated during the court hearing of the case on the 11th where a British national was killed and his girlfriend was gang raped.

The main allegation against the defendants is the murder of Khuram Shaikh and the raping of Victoria Alexandra.

17 allegations have been claimed against them including unlawful assembly, damaging the hotel, stealing alcohol, possessing an automatic firearm without a license.

A case was filed against Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandra-pushpa Vidanapathirana and 6 others.
