The All Ceylon Nurses Association stated the government has been slashing the allocation for health services in the country.

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today, All Ceylon Nurses Association’s President Gamini Kumarasinghe said 1.97% of the GDP in 2006 has gradually been reduced to 1.3% in 2013.

He also charged the government for taking cover of the midwifery training dispute between nurses and family health workers and delaying solutions to the problems of the nursing service.

Meanwhile Joint Trade Union Federation members of 27 grades launched a token strike from 8am to 12 noon today on five demands including salary arrears.

However Federation Convener P.H. Somarathna said the strike was not staged at hospitals in Matara, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, Lady Ridgeway Children’s hospital, Castle Street hospital for women, De Soyza hospital for women, Maharagama Cancer hospital and Peradeniya Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s hospital.

He also said a decision on the future action about the strike will be taken during the executive committee to be held tomorrow.
