A suicide bomb has killed at least 21 people in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

At least 13 civilians were killed in the attack, which took place at a police checkpoint at the entrance to the Kadhi-miya district.

Many of those killed were reportedly on their way to a Shia shrine in the area.

Iraq is experiencing an upsurge in instability. The government is battling Islamist militants, who have seized cities in the country's north-west.

At least five of those killed in the bombing were policemen. The area is home to the Musa al-Khadim shrine, a site of pilgrimage for many Muslims.
