The Irrigation Department asks farmers in 10 drought hit districts to dig wells in order to irrigate their lands as the drought could continue further.

Irrigation Department’s Water Science Unit’s Director Janaki Meegastenna told our news team water levels of 72 main irrigation tanks have been declined to 17%.

The drought is currently prevailing in the districts of Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Ampara, Hambantota, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu.

The Irrigation Department stated it is essential to dig irrigation wells in Weeraketiya of the Hambantota district, main tank areas of the Anuradhapura district and Padaviya Divisional Secretariat Division area.

However National Water Supply and Drainage Board has started a special program to supply drinking water to the consumers.

Its General Manager Ranjith Balasuriya said water bowsers have been used to distribute water through District Secretaries of the respective areas.

However Water and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said lack of water bowsers have created problems for the ministry to distribute drinking water to the drought hit people.

He said steps will be taken to purchase 100 water bowsers within the next few days.
