The functions of hospitals throughout the island have been affected due to the strike launched by health staffers including minor workers.
Hospital Directors said among the affected services are OPDs, Clinics and general surgeries.
Health workers belonging to 27 grades resorted to trade union action of sick leave at 7am today on five demands including a salary increase and recruiting them as permanent cadre.
Colombo National Hospital Director Dr. Anil Jasinghe stated certain hospital services are affected due to the strike and Civil Defence Force has been called to avoid collapse of services.
Civil Defence Force assistance has been sought to continue services at the Kalubovila Hospital as well.
Meanwhile functions of Clinics and OPDs of other hospitals throughout the island including Kandy General Hospital, Teaching hospitals of Peradeniya, Ragama and Karapitiya have been affected.
At the same time, the Committee of Health Trade Union Federation launched a protest march from Colombo National Hospital to the President’s House demanding a solution to their problems.
Our correspondent reported there are heavy traffic blocks on several roads around Town Hall area due to the health workers protest march.
