Around 1 million 150 thousand persons have been affected by the drought which is prevalent in 14 districts in the island.

Although showers were experienced in some areas, no rains fell in drought areas.

Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Ampara, Hambantota, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi are the districts that have been affected.

Water levels of the main reservoirs in these areas maintained by the Irrigation Department have already receded down to 16 percent.

The Deputy Media Director of the Disaster Management Centre Sarath Lal Kumara requested from the residents of these areas to continue using water sparingly.

Meanwhile, residents of these areas stated that they are facing an issue of obtaining drinking water.

They told our news team that they need to travel for miles to find water.
