No rains in drought hit areas till October; Water for farming only till September
The MET Department stated that showers cannot be expected in drought hit areas until mid October.
Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Ampara, Hambantota, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi are the districts that have been worst affected.
Meanwhile the water levels of the reservoirs in the north, north central, eastern and Uva provinces have further decreased owing the dry weather conditions.
When we made inquiries in this regard director of the water management unit of the department of irrigation Janaki Meegasthanna said that they will have to limit the release of water only for drinking purposes, if the drought prevails.
Around 1 million 150 thousand persons have been affected by the drought which is prevalent in 14 districts in the island.
Residents of these areas stated that they are facing severe difficulties in obtaining drinking water.
