Cultivation of 18000 acres in Kanthale halted due to drought

Farmer Organizations stated about 18 thousand acres of cultivable land in Kantale have been abandoned due to the prevailing drought.

The Kantale Farmer Collective stated 8 thousand families in the area have also been affected due to drought.

President of Kantale Farmer Collective Indika Paranavithana said authorities should intervene in the matter and provide them some relief at this moment.

Meanwhile the Agrarian Development Office stated when compared to the other drought hit districts, residents of Hambantota and Puttalam districts are the most affected as ground water has dried in these two districts.

Head of the Water Management Unit of the Agrarian Development Office Prabhath Vitharana further explained the situation.
