The Supreme Court decided today that Northern Provincial Chief Minister C.V .Wigneswaran has no authority to issue orders on his Provincial Chief Secretary.

Concluding a petition filed by Northern Provincial Chief Secretary Vijaya Lakshmee Ramesh, Chief Justice Mohan Peries said that only the Public Service Commission has authority to give orders to government officials.

Northern Provincial Chief Secretary earlier filed the petition requesting the Supreme Court to quash a Circular issued by the Northern Chief Minister through which the fundamental rights of the Chief Secretary and her staff had been violated.

14 persons including the Northern Provincial Chief Minister, its Governor, the Attorney General and the Public Service Commission had been named as respondents in the case.

The verdict of the case was announced today by a panel of three Supreme Court Judges including Chief Justice Mohan Peries, Judge K. Sripavan and Judge Rohini Marasinghe.
