UNP MP Hareen Fernando resigned from his parliament seat today in order to contest the Uva Provincial Council election as its Chief Ministerial candidate.
MP Fernando made a special statement in parliament before resigning from his post.
Later the former MP was congratulated by MPs of the ruling party as well as the Opposition MPs in the chambers as well as outside of it.
Our correspondent stated that a large gathering thronged in the public gallery to witness the MPs statement of resignation.
Later a large gathering of supporters welcomed former MP when he reached the Jayanthipura parliament entrance.
The cheering supporters who lifted the former MP took him on a parade on Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte parliament road towards Rajagiriya.
Heavy traffic were experienced in and around Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte main road as well as other sub roads in the area due to the parade which conducted former MP Hareen Fernando to the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha this afternoon.
Our correspondent stated that former MP Hareen Fernando was escorted by a vehicle parade to go to Badulla.
Hareen Fernando obtained the highest number of preferential votes from the Badulla district and elected to parliament in the 2010 General Election.
Next in the preferential vote list K. Velayudan will be appointed to fill the parliament seat vacated by Hareen Fernando.

UNP MP Hareen Fernando resigned from his parliamentary seat short while ago, after issuing a special announcement.
The MP resigned from the parliament to contest as UNP candidate for the Chief Minister position at the Uva provincial council election.
MP Hareen Fernando was elected to the parliament after becoming the highest vote taker for UNP in Badulla District at the 2010 General Election.
The vacant MP seat will be succeeded by K. Velayudan as per the UNP preferential list.
