A tense situation erupted at Maradana Railway Headquarters as a group of UNP MPs reached there from Panadura to inspect the shortcomings of the service.
A group of Railway Trade Union members affiliated to Sri Lanka Freedom party protested against the UNP MPs inspection tour.
Deputy Chief Secretary of Sri Lanka Nidahas Dumriya Seva Sangamaya Gamini Suriya Arachchi described to our news team about their protest against the UNP MPs inspection tour.
UNP MPs Eran Wickramarathna, Ajith P Perera, Ajith Mannapperuma, P Harison and Harsha De Silva have joined the inspection tour of Maradana Railway Headquarters today.
The group expected to get into the Colombo bound train from Aluthgama which is scheduled to pass Panadura at 7.10am.
Our correspondent said the train reached Panadura 20 minutes late, and the MPs and media personnel got into the train separately as the train was overcrowded.
The MPs later inspected about the facilities inside the train, and got off at Bambalapitiya Railway Station, inspected facilities there and enquired the passengers about available facilities.
Later the MPs reached Railway Headquarters in Maradana by their private vehicles and a group of workers started a protest against the MPs’ visit.
Amid worker protest, the MPs said that they wanted to see the Railway General Manager but railway authorities allowed the MPs to have a discussion with Deputy Director Amitha Udaya Kumari.
Our correspondent stated the group of MP’s however managed to avoid the protesters and used a Railway Headquarters’ back door to go to the Railway Control Room.
