Police took into custody an elephant calf while it was being transported in a container at Balagolla area in Matale.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said the driver of the container and another suspect who were transporting the calf were also arrested.
He said the calf elephant is in an ailing condition when it was found by police.
The suspects have told police they brought the elephant calf for Kandy Asala Perehera.
At that time, Police informed them to present the legal documents with regard to the registration of the animal.
Later police put the elephant under the care of Giritale Wildlife Office until its registration documents are presented to police.
Wildlife Director General H.D. Rathnayake told our news team his officials took away the elephant calf to Giritale office premises this afternoon.
