UPDATE: SL provides 1 million US Dollars in financial assistance to Palestine.-Video
President Mahinda Rajapaksa today announced that Sri Lanka will be providing 1 million dollars in financial assistance to Palestine.
President Rajapaksa has been a long-time supporter of the Palestinian cause and is the Founder President of the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine.
Earlier in July, the President also called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to inquire about the situation in Gaza and offered his condolences for the lives that have been lost.
In January this year, President Rajapaksa made his first visit to Palestine on his tour of the region that also included Jordan and Israel.
During that visit, the Government of Palestine conferred President Rajapaksa with the “Star of Palestine” – the highest award of the State of Palestine – for the President’s continued support and commitment to the Palestinian cause.
Meanwhile, The High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka Y.K. Sinha called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning at Temple Trees.
Sinha expressed his appreciation for the President’s gesture to release Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody on the occasion of India's Independence Day that is celebrated tomorrow.
President Rajapaksa, expressing concern about the impact this situation is having on both the lives of fishermen and the environment, expressed the need for a permanent solution.
The Indian High Commissioner also briefed the President on the
Indian CEO’s Forum that is set to take place this week in line with Indian Independence Day celebrations in Sri Lanka.
