The Epidemiology unit states that the cause behind the sudden death of a woman in the Rikili-gas-kadawala base hospital is not Ebola virus infection.

The director of the unit Dr. Pabha Palihawadena said that this was revealed through laboratory tests.

A woman who was in a critical state with symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscular pains was admitted to the Rikili-gas-kadawala base hospital last Friday.

The woman died within 24 hours of admission.

Various rumours spread about her sudden death, one of which was that she was infected with ebola.

The woman has returned 3 weeks ago after a pilgrimage to Thirupathi in India.

The director of the epidemiology unit Paba Palihawadana said that however tests carried out on the remains of the deceased has ruled out ebola as the cause of death.

She also noted that Leptospirosis also known as rat fever was identified as a possible cause of the woman’s death.
