The Wildlife Department has launched a special operation to capture leopards that are roaming in the neighbourhood of tea estates in Nawalapitiya.

Assistant Director of Wildlife Central Division H.H. Chitrasena told our news team a four-month pregnant mother died of a leopard attack on a previous occasion.

He said the leopard was captured later and handed over to the Zoo.

In addition, two youths were hospitalized after they were attacked recently by a leopard in the neighbourhood of Bar-cable estate in Nawalapitiya.

The residents in the area told our news team that their poultry, dogs and cows were attacked or killed by these stray leopards.

A protest was also held at the Barcable estate demanding the authorities to capture these leopards and save the residents as well as their livestock from leopards.

The residents also said they have informed the wildlife official about several other leopards, but no proper action was taken to settle the problem.

However Assistant Director of Wildlife Central Division H.H. Chitrasena said an operation is underway to capture the leopards.
