Infighting against foreign trips on public money; Cost of Kaluthara and Kurunagala Rs 4.9 million
Certain Local Government members have opposed the move to organize foreign trips for their fellow members at the expense of public funds.
A group of members of Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha are scheduled to leave the country tomorrow to participate in a workshop to be held in Bangkok.
A group of ruling UNP members and their opposition counterparts of Kalutara Urban Council returned after a similar trip in Thailand last Sunday.
However Deputy Mayor Ameer Nazeer, UPFA members Naleen Mahesh Perera and B.D.W. Joseph did not participate in the trip.
A national newspaper reported that 2 million rupees per participant were allocated from the Council budget for the Bangkok trip.
When this extravagant trip was taken up for discussion during the Kalutara Urban council sessions held on the 12 of this month, UNP member Wasantha Dias blamed the media personnel.
Meanwhile 2.9 million rupees from the Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha allocations have been reserved for the Bangkok trip to be started tomorrow.
13 members out of 22 of Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha are from UFPA. Eight members are from the UNP while one member is from the JVP.
The first of a two groups-trip would leave for Bangkok tomorrow.
However, JVP Kurunegala Pradeshiya Sabha member Dharmapriya Dissanayake told our news team he would not participate in the extravagant Bangkok trip.
