Sri Lanka rejects proposal to allow Indians to Fish in Sri Lanka waters
The Sri Lankan government rejected the proposal to provide a temporary licence for Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lankan waters for 3 years.
The proposal had been made by the Senior Leader of the Bharathiya Janatha Party, Subramanium Swamy.
Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathna stated that the proposal cannot be accepted as a diplomatic one.
Meanwhile, a Sri Lankan delegation will leave for India on the 28th for discussions on the fishermen’s issue.
Rameswaram fishermen, who have been on an indefinite strike to secure their boats impounded in Sri Lanka, dropped their plan, following appeals from officials.
This was in hope of a positive outcome at the proposed discussion.
