No running water to Hambanthota from next month-Video
The department of irrigation said today that drinking water as well as the general water requirements for the Hambanthota district will have to be fulfilled using outside sources, from next month.
The Directress of the Water Management Unit of the Irrigation Department Janaki Meegastanna said, this is because the water levels of the main reservoirs including Veheragala which supply drinking water to the Kataragama town, have decreased to the zero percent level.
Even though showers were experienced in various parts of the island recently, the water level of the 72 main reservoirs of the irrigation department are still at 14 percent.
The Directress of the Water Management Unit of the Irrigation Department Janaki Meegastanna said that the water level of the biggest reservoir in the country- Senanayake Samudraya, is also at 6 percent.
This reservoir provides water especially to majority of the areas in the Northern Province.
