The Ministry of Agriculture has decided to ban a weedicide called glyphosate in 4 districts, which is believed to be the cause for the spread of kidney diseases across North Central and other provinces.

The districts where the ban will be imposed include Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Badulla and Kurunegala.

According to a survey conducted by the WHO, this weedicide was identified as the cause to the unidentified kidney disease in the country

Glypho-sate which is widely sold in the country, is used as the main weedicide for paddy cultivation

Expressing his views regarding the decision, Agriculture Department’s Director General Doctor Rohan Wijekoon had this to say.
