Shinzo Abe arrived in Sri Lanka today as the first Japanese Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka in 24 years.

Abe, who landed in Colombo on a two-day visit, was welcomed at the airport by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Immediately upon arrival, Abe joined Rajapaksa in launching the Japanese-funded second phase of the development of the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.

The President and the Prime Minister proceeded to the site of the two-story passenger terminal building at BIA that will be constructed with funds provided to Sri Lanka through a Japanese loan facility.

The visiting Prime Minister was accorded an official welcome ceremony with state honors at the Presidential Secretariat.

The Japanese Prime Minister also visited the Sri Lankan Parliament on an observation tour.

He was welcomed at the Parliamentary Complex at a special ceremony organized by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and Parliamentary delegates.

Subsequently, President Mahinda Rajapakse and Premier Shinzo Abe held a bilateral discussion at the Presidential Secretariat.

The Japanese leader is accompanied by a large business delegation.

He also attended the Japan-Sri Lanka Business Forum meeting held in Colombo.

The Japanese premier’s arrival comes following the invitation extended by President Mahinda Rajapksa during a visit to Japan in March 2013.
