Programme to distribute Rs 2500 drought relief in Monaragala district temporarily stopped.-UVA PC Poll 2014
The 2,500 rupees drought relief to be distributed among each family in the Moneragala district with effect from today has been suspended temporarily.
This program has been planned by the Economic Development Ministry.
Earlier, the Election Monitoring Organizations, the Election Commissioner as well as the Human Rights Commission have requested to stop such programs.
They made the request as such assistance could bring an impact on a single party at a time when a date is fixed for the Uva Provincial Council election.
Later Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya inquired about the program from the Moneragala district secretary.
Accordingly Economic Development Ministry Secretary Nihal Jayatilaka said the program was suspended temporarily.
Answering a journalist, election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya expressed his views about the drought relief program during a media briefing held in Moneragala yesterday.
