Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said today that he does not expect to postpone the Uva Provincial Council election.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe also questioned in parliament yesterday whether the government is going to postpone the Uva Provincial Council election due to the increasing violence in the area.

Addressing a media briefing held at the election secretariat, election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said candidates have raised objection to postpone the election.

Meanwhile a group of representatives from the National Bhikku Council met election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya this morning.

Addressing the media after the meeting with the election commissioner, National Bhikku Council General Secretary Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thera said certain election candidates have been using religious symbols for their propaganda campaigns.

Ananda Sagara Thera requested the voters not to use their franchise for any such candidate.
