Update: Monaragala drought relief to be handed over tomorrow.-Video
Drought affected families of the Moneragala district were compelled to return home empty handed today as the authorities postponed the payment of 2,500 rupees relief package.
The drought relief package was scheduled to be distributed among 1.3 million and 817 families today.
When our news team enquired the Moneragala Divisional Secretary about the postponement, he said the relief was not given today as the distribution should be streamlined.
He also said the officials of his office together with Grama Niladaries and Economic Development officers will visit Grama Niladhari divisions tomorrow to distribute the relief package.
Meanwhile two fundamental rights cases were filed today by JVP affiliated All Ceylon Farmers Association and Paffrel Organization seeking Supreme Court order to obtain the same relief package for the drought affected families in other areas.
The petitioners stated that the fundamental rights of the drought affected in other districts are violated by giving the relief only to Moneragala people.
Having lodged the rights case, All Ceylon Farmers Association National Organizer and former MP Namal Karunarathna expressed his views to the media.
Later a group of farmers from Moneragala district filed a fundamental rights case.
Having considered the petition last Friday, the Supreme Court ordered the Economic Development Ministry to distribute the 2,500 rupees drought relief as planned.
