Update: Chinese President welcomed with State honours.-Video
The state festival to welcome visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping was held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon at the President Secretariat in Colombo.
A special gun-salute with guard of honor by the members of the three armed forces was held during the official ceremony to welcome the visiting Chinese President.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning.
The Chinese President and First Lady were welcomed by hundreds of students in an elaborate welcome ceremony at the airport, following which they, along with the delegation, travelled to Colombo.
President Xi Jinping’s visit to Sri Lanka is the first by a Chinese President after a lapse of 28 years.
Sri Lanka and China in recent years have developed increasingly closer economic and trade relations and a proposed free trade agreement between the two countries will boost Sri Lanka's future development.
Today, President Xi will join President Rajapaksa for extended bilateral discussions at the Presidential Secretariat and commission the last phase of the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant.
The two leaders are also expected to join their delegations to sign more than 20 bilateral agreements to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
In the evening, President Rajapaksa and the First Lady will host a banquet in honour of the Chinese President and First Lady, and the Chinese delegation at Temple Trees.
Tomorrow President Rajapaksa and President Xi will visit the Colombo International Container Terminal to launch the construction of the Colombo Port City.
Meanwhile the police said that vehicle movement will be restricted in several roads today and tomorrow in line with the Chinese President’s visit.
