UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has resigned from the party Leadership Council.

He said that he decided to resign from the position to clear certain barriers which occurred while working to revive unity within the party.

Speaking further to our news team MP Tissa Attanayake said that his resignation letter was handed over to the party national leader Ranil Wickremesinghe this morning.

Meanwhile UNP sources stated that MP Attanayake resigned from the Leadership Council membership following a clash with MP Ravi Karunanayake.

Reports stated that MP Karunanayake has charged MP Attanayake for his intervention to settle the disagreement between Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and MP Sajith Premadasa.

Party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has also complained to the party leader about MP Karunanayake’s recent behavior in the Leadership Council which became a hindrance towards bringing about unison within the party.

The sources also stated that the near reason for MP Attanayake to resign from the membership is the heated situation that erupted in the Leadership Council.

Meanwhile UNP sources said that several vacant positions of the second row will be filled with new faces when the party working committee meets tomorrow.

Among the positions to be filled are a Deputy Leader, an Assistant Leader and the Treasurer.

The sources also said the MP Sajith Premadasa will probably be appointed as the Deputy Leader of the party.
