Bail rejected for Vaas Gunawardana; case to be heard daily from October 14th.
The Colombo High Court rejected to grant bail for the 6 suspects of Mohammad Siyam murder case including Vas Gunawardana.
The Court decided to hear the case on October 14th.
If a suspect of a case filed by the Attorney General has spent in remand prison for over a year, the Attorney General should make a fresh request from the Court to remand the suspect again.
Pointing to that faulting of the case, the lawyers of the suspects requested the Court to grant bail for the suspects.
Appearing on behalf of the plaintiff Deputy Solicitor General told the Court on 7th of this month that releasing the suspects on bail could bring intimidation to the witnesses as well as the future proceedings of the case.
The chief member of the special bench of three judges Rohini Walgama was absent in the bench today as she was promoted an Appeal Court judge.
Meanwhile the suspects including Vas Gunawardana have filed a petition requesting the Appeal Court to repeal the High Court decision to hear the case by the Special bench of judges.
On a previous occasion too, the Colombo High Court rejected bail for Vas Gunawardana’s son Ravindu Gunawardana who is also in remand in connection with the Mohammad Siyam murder case.
