President to meet with Modi today
The meeting between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Sessions will be held today.
Presidential Spokesperson Mohan Samaranayake stated that the meeting will be held at around 9.15 PM Sri Lankan time.
This would be the first meeting between the two state leaders, since President Mahinda Rajapaksa participated at the swearing in ceremony of the Indian Premier.
Modi, who has visited several South Asian countries after been appointed, is yet to make an announcement on a visit to Sri Lanka and hence today’s discussion is termed by analysts as a crucial one.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is also expected to hold discussions with several other leaders including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Meanwhile, Heads of Commonwealth Nations attending the UN General Assembly met under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who holds the Chair of the Commonwealth.
Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma pointed out the importance of achieving millennium development goals through meaningful development.
