President invites Ban Ki-moon to visit Sri Lanka.-Video

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met for talks at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

Congratulating President Rajapaksa on his leadership, Ban acknowledged the progress that has been made in Sri Lanka and expressed his optimism that the remaining challenges would also be overcome.

The President outlined the developments that have taken place, including the near-completion of all demining activities, the improvement of health services, and the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-combatants.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also underscored the need for wider political consultation for a successful political process.

President Rajapaksa invited the UN Secretary General to make another visit to Sri Lanka to assess the development since his last visit.

Earlier on President Rajapaksa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions and agreed to work towards further strengthening relations between the two countries.

Regarding the recent meeting the Indian leader had with Sri Lanka’s Tamil National Alliance, the Prime Minister informed President Rajapaksa of the discussion that took place with the group.

On the issue of fishermen, both leaders agreed that the matters must be handled carefully since there are sensitivities among all concerned parties.

President Rajapaksa reiterated his concerns about the practice of bottom trawling.

President Rajapaksa also thanked Prime Minister Modi for India’s support and constructive initiatives at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
