The National Social Development Institute says Sri Lanka has become the first country in South Asia to face the increase of ageing population issue.

Training Director of the Institute Karunarathna Gamage told our news team various programs have already been implemented to face this challenge.

Sri Lanka’s ageing population has been projected to be increased by 22 percent against the total population in the country by the year 2030.

The Sri Lanka Elders Health Specialists Association stated the number of elders will also be hit by non communicable diseases coincident to the increase of ageing population.

They also believe that 1 out of 8 octogenarians will suffer depression in the next decade.
