President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of 76 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.

Officials at the Indian High Commission in Colombo have confirmed the President's order which comes days after the President had discussions with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the United Nations general Assembly in New York last week.

The Hindu reported that during the meeting with President Rajapaksa, the Indian Prime Minister has raised the issue of Indian fishermen,

According to The Hindu, the group of fishermen to be released includes different batches arrested in early September on charges of engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lanka's territorial waters.
