New Tamil Nadu Chief minister Panneer-selvam has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take "positive and concrete" steps to secure the immediate release of 20 Tamil Nadu fishermen and their 75 boats from the custody of the Sri Lankan authorities.

In his first letter to the Prime Minister after assuming charge on Monday, Panneer-selvam exemplified his unflinching loyalty to his party supremo by recalling the efforts taken by AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa to solve the fishermen crisis.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of 76 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.

Out of 76 fishermen, 72 are from Tamil Nadu.
