The management of the Sabaragamuwa University took measures to close the university indefinitely from today, as a group of female university students forcefully entered the Sinharaja male hostel.
A tense situation was experienced near the Sabaragamuwa University from this morning as the students launched a strike near the Pabahinna junction stating that the newly constructed female’s hostel is not up to standards.
The newly constructed hostel was scheduled to be declared open by minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake this morning.
However the protest was launched by the students disrupting the minister’s motorcade near the Pabahinna junction.
A senior security official of the minister who was at the location said that even though the minister attempted to speak to the protesters he was not allowed to do so but his security guards.
Police media spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that even though they requested the students to disperse they refused to do so.
He noted that therefore water cannons were used to disperse the crowd.
Thereafter the minister declared open the new hostel and laid the foundation stone for anther hostel.
Expressing his views during the function minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake said that he would’ve treated the students in a better manner if it was not an election time.
The minister further noted that no changes will be made to the newly constructed hostels due to the influence of the students.
