The students of Sabaragamuwa University staged a protest today at the Pambahinna Junction demanding the reopening of the university.

However Sabaragamuwa University Vice Chancellor Professor Chandana Udawatta says he would not take a decision about the reopening of the university until its students vacate themselves from the hostels.

The university administration closed the hostel after a group of female students forcefully entered the Sinharaja boys’ hostel yesterday.

A commotion erupted yesterday when Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake arrived in the university to open two buildings for female students.

The students staged a protest at the Pambahinna Junction preventing the minister to enter the university premises.

They also charged that the constructions of the two buildings were substandard.

Later police used water cannons to disperse students and clear the way for the minister to enter the opening ceremony premises.

After the opening of the two new hostels and the laying a foundation stone for another hostel building, the minister used an alternative route to exit the premises.

Later the students refused to occupy the newly opened hostels, and despite Vice Chancellor Professor Chandana Udawatta's orders a group of students have occupied the boys’ hostel.

However member of Sabaragamuwa Students collective Rasindu Jayasinghe told our news team during the protest that they would not give up the struggle until the university is reopened.

Meanwhile addressing the opening ceremony of the two buildings, Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake rejected the students’ allegation that the two buildings were constructed under substandard criteria.
