Sabaragamuwa University Vice Chancellor Professor Chandana Udawatta says he would not take a decision about the reopening of the university until the female students vacate themselves from the Sinharaja hostel.

He said many of the students have vacated the hostel after the university was closed indefinitely yesterday.

However representative of the Sabaragamuwa Students collective Rasindu Jayasinghe says all female students have not vacated the university hostels.

Meanwhile the Sathyagraha campaign carried out by Sabaragamuwa university students at the Pambahinna junction is still continuing for the 35th day today.

The protesting students demand the authorities to permit them to restart the already suspended Students Union and remove the suspension order on 8 students.

However addressing a public gathering held at Malwatta neighborhood in Matale, Deputy Higher Education Minister Nandimitra Ekanayake said that the Front Liners Socialist Party is handling the student leaders of Sabaragamuwa University.

A commotion erupted yesterday when Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake arrived in the university to open two hostels for female students.

The students staged a protest at the Pambahinna Junction preventing the minister to enter the university premises.

They also charged that the constructions of the two buildings were substandard.

Later the university administration closed the hostel after a group of female students forcefully entered the Sinharaja boys’ hostel.
