A black rhinoceros cub was born in Dehiwala Zoo this morning.

The cub was born to the pair of black rhinoceros brought from Japan under the animal exchange program in 2007.

Black Rhinoceros or Diceros bicornis are considered as an endangered species native to central and eastern African region.

A spokesman from the Dehiwala Zoo said the two elephant cubs Kosala and Anula were given to Japan under the same exchange program and the pair of rhinos was therefore called by the same names.

Meanwhile President of the Biodiversity Conservation Center Pubudu Weerarathna said black rhinoceros are among the 10 most endangered animals listed in the Red Data Book.
