Discussion between Colombo prison guards and officials; taking inmates to court disrupted by the strike.-Video
A special discussion is currently underway regarding the trade union action carried out by the prison guards and several other prison officials of the Colombo remand, Magasin and Welikada prisons since this morning.
According to a spokesperson, a group of officials from the ministry of rehabilitation and prison reforms, and the subject minister Chandrasiri Gadjadeera are present at the meeting.
A discussion is also scheduled to be held between the Commissioner General of prisons and prison guards, later today.
The trade union action was launched by a group of prison officials including prison guards due to several reasons including the special treatment given to officials of the intelligence and security unit of the prison.
Our court reporters noted that accordingly presenting inmates before courts in Colombo and several urban areas was disrupted.
However the media spokesman of the department of prisons, Superintendent T.N. Upuldeniya said prison officials cannot engage in trade union actions.
