Railway discussions fail; all night mail services cancelled.
The Railway Control room at the Fort Railway Station says that all inbound and outbound mail trains have been cancelled.
Earlier, the Railway Graded Officers’ Trade Union Federation stated that its membership would launch a 24 hour strike with effect from midnight today.
Federation Convener Janaka Fernando said that his membership decided to go ahead after the scheduled discussion with the Secretary to the President did not taken place today.
The Railway Control room stated that all mail trains were cancelled because the strike is to start while the night mails are on their way to long destinations such as Vavuniya, Palai, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Badulla.
Railway control room also said that only Galle night mail would probably run today as it could reach Galle before the strike.
The Railway Graded Officers’ Trade Union Federation consists of 11 grades including station masters, train controllers, engine drivers, operators and observation officers.
Federation Convener Janaka Fernando further explained about the train strike to be launched tonight.
When our news team contacted Railway General Manager B.A.P. Ariyarathna said the authorities are currently planning ways and means to continue maximum services.
