The chief minister of Uva, Shasheendra Rajapaksa said today that there was a group who was preparing for a new chief minister for Uva.

He expressed this view at a meeting held today for the staff and the ruling party councillors of the Uva provincial council.

The 6th session of Uva Provincial Council commenced under the patronage of chief minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa today.

Previously he assumed duties as the Provincial Chief Minister, while the newly elected UNP councilors took their oaths before the provincial governor C. Nanda Mathew.

Later, a secret vote was held to select the PC chairman since two names were proposed during the proceedings.

Provincial Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa nominated the former Provincial Minister A.M. Buddha-daasa, while UNP councilor R.M. Ratnayake nominated Upali Samaraweera for the position of Chairman.

Following the secret vote, A.M. Buddha-daasa received 19 votes while Upali Samaraweera received 13 votes.

The two JVP councilors refrained from voting.

Later, a secret vote was held to select the Deputy Chairman where UNP councilor Ananda Kumarasiri nominated R.M. Jayasinghe’s name, while Hemal Ratnayake nominated UPFA councilor Saliya Sumedha’s name.

Councilor Saliya Sumedha was elected by a secret vote as the Deputy Chairman after he received 19 votes, while UNP Councilor R.M Jayasinghe received only 13 votes.

The JVP councilors once again refrained from voting.

Expressing his views tom us, A.M. Buddha-dasa who was appointed as the chairman of the Uva provincial council said that he will take measures to protect the rights of the governing and opposition councillors.
