The Yal Devi train will resume services to Jaffna after a lapse of 24 years.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will ceremonially inaugurate the service today.

President will open the Northern Railway Line up to Jaffna and the President will join the inaugural drive as a special passenger.

Officiails of the Department of Railways have taken steps to resume services of the Yal Devi to Jaffna after completing the construction work on the railway line featuring a modern signalling system.

Railway Department officials under the Transport Ministry and with financial assistance from the Indian government under the Indian Line of Credit embarked on this massive project of restoring the Northern rail tracks to restart the train services connecting the North and South.

The Colombo - Jaffna, Northern Railway Line up to Jaffna was reconstructed at a cost of 58 billion rupees it has been constructed to accommodate trains speeding up to 120 kilometers per hour.
