Rathana Thero's 19th amendment which restricts presidential powers, released.-Video
The proposal for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution prepared by Pivithuru Hetak national council was released today for public opinion.
The coordinator of the organization Athuraliye Rathana Thera said it is unsuitable to hold a presidential election at this juncture without making a constitutional amendment.
During the ceremony held at the BMICH to release the proposal this afternoon, Rathana Thera presented the first copy of the proposals to the UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Later it was presented to Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa as well.
Representing the government, Ministers Dinesh Gunawardana, Wasudeva Nanayakkara, DEW Gunasekera, Dr. Tissa Vitharana, Patalee Champika Ranawaka, Deputy Ministers Nandimitra Ekanayake and Earl Gunasekera participated.
Our correspondent said that Opposition MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Sunil Handunnetti and TULF leader V. Ananda sangaree also participated.
The 19th constitutional amendment has made proposals to several chapters of the Constitution including a proposal to limit executive powers of the President.
It has also proposed to hold the Presidential election and the general election on the same day and to declare the post of president automatically null and void in the event parliament is dissolved.
Pivithuru Hetak organization’s coordinator Athuraliye Rathana Thera further described about the new constitutional amendment proposals.
