Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse a protest march organized by the Inter University Students Federation on several demands including an increase in the Mahapola bursary.

The protesters were attacked with tear-gas when they attempted to remove a police barrier and go forward just after passing the official residence of parliament Speaker.

The protest started from the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the Colombo University at 2 in this afternoon, and students marched via Lotus Pond Roundabout, Horton Place, Independent Square, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Borella Junction, and Rajagiriya Ayurveda Roundabout before they reached the parliament entry road.

Our correspondents said that the protesting students attempted to remove a police barrier on the parliament road and tried to march forward.

At that point, police shot water cannons at the protest and later tear-gassed students.

Later Inter University Students Federation Convener Najith Indika expressed his views to our news team.
