A speedy investigation by govt with regard to the attack on fishermen in front of the fisheries Ministry.-Video
The Government has decided to hold an immediate investigation about the pelting of stones at the fishermen engaged in an agitation in front of the Fisheries Ministry at Maligawatta in Colombo.
A Government spokesman said that he expresses his regrets with regard to the incident faced by the fisher folk at a Government premise.
The spokesman said further the Government’s attention had even now been drawn on the incident.
It is also significant that many have condemned the attack a group loitering at the Ministry premises had directed at the group of fishermen engaged in an agitation in front of the fisheries Ministry at Maligawatta in Colombo.
Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunaratna also said that he apologizes to the persons concerned with regard to the attack.
Fishermen and multi-day trawler owners from Chilaw, Kalpitya, Negombo and Wennappuwa totaling more than 500 staged an agitation in front of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry day-before-yesterday.
This agitation asking for eight demands including the banning of foreign trawlers engaged in fishing within Sri Lankan boundaries was organized by the All Island Fisheries Union.
Tension cropped up when a stones were hurled suddenly from the direction of the Fisheries Ministry at the fishermen staging the agitation,
While four fishermen engaged in the agitation sustained injuries, the fishermen charged that hooligans staying in the Ministry premises had attacked them.
Expressing his views about the incident Minister Dayaasrita Thissera too told our news team that he condemns the attack directed at the fishermen.
