Panadura Chief Magistrate reprimands the police
The Panadura Magistrate Court ordered Panadura ASP to submit a show cause with regard to the murder of a woman in the upper compound of the Rankoth Temple in Panadura.
When the case relevant to the murder was taken before the Court today, Panadura Chief Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta questioned police on whose orders they removed the body and the evidence from the site before a Magistrate inquiry.
The Magistrate also said that police has attempted to mislead the Court by providing false information with regard to this murder.
Addressing policemen of the crime investigation unit including its OIC, the Magistrate said police is bound to give full assistance to the court to enable a magistrate to hold a proper inquiry.
The Magistrate also emphasized that police have violated law by removing the body of a murdered person and its evidence before a magistrate inquiry.
Earlier, Panadura Additional Magistrate Sandun Vithana also informed the IGP to hold an inquiry on this illegal act by police.
Panadura police had submitted a ‘B’ report to the court to prove the woman was not dead in the Temple compound but was taken to Panadura hospital.
The Magistrate said he read a media report how Panadura HQI told one of his top officers over the phone that the woman was murdered in the temple compound on the 10th of this month.
The Magistrate said therefore police has engaged in a grave effort to mislead the court.
Meanwhile the suspect of the case was remanded again until the 27th of this month when he was produced before the court today.
