Shipping corporation imported 5 vessels of coal to Norochcholai without ministry approval - discloses minister Champika.-Video
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka admitted today that there was a loss of 1 thousand 507 million rupees incurred in importing coal during his tenure as Power and Energy Minister in 2012.
Current Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi disclosed about the in coal import in parliament yesterday.
Minister Ranawaka told during a media conference held in Colombo today those 5 vessels of coal were imported by Lanka Coal Company and transported by State Shipping Corporation.
He said his ministry of Power and Energy did not give permission to import the stock of coal as coal cannot be unloaded during the South Western monsoon season.
Minister Ranawaka further said he instructed the authorities not to unload the stocks, but they have done so on Attorney General’s advice.
Although he educated the respective officers to initiate an investigation, he was unable to take further action as he was removed from the ministry post a few days later.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka further said that a constitutional institution should be set up to investigate corruption of this nature.
