President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented the budget for the year 2015 to parliament yesterday.

The debate on the second reading will be held from today onwards.

One of the proposals was to increase the minimum salary of state sector employees to 15,000 Rupees.

While the Employers contribution to the EPF has been increased from 12 to 14%, a consolidated tax has been imposed for vehicle imports.

Accordingly sources say that a decrease in prices of certain categories of vehicles is expected.

However, Government and Opposition members share different views on the budget.

Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Wasudewa Nanayakkara stated that this a well planned government centric budget covering all aspects.

UNP General Secretary Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake stated that this budget offered no relief to the public.

However, Minister Bandula Gunawardana stated that everyone has been granted concessions through this budget.

Meanwhile, JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath stated this was a sugar coated budget aimed at elections.
