Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi disclosed in parliament recently that a loss of 1.5 billion rupees have been incurred from coal imports in 2012.

The following day, former subject minister Patalee Champika Ranawaka convened a media conference to respond to Minister Wanniarachchi’s statement.

He said the Shipping Corporation imported two vessels of coal in 2012 without the approval of Ceylon Electricity Board.

Minister Ranawaka also said that he instructed the authorities not to unload the two vessels of coal at that time.

Minister Ranawaka also said that the culprits who involved in this racket should be identified and brought to justice.

Answering a question by UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa in parliament today, Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi reminded about the CID investigations in connection with the coal-import.
