The Disaster Management Center stated that nearly 300 persons are missing in a landslide that occurred around 7.30 this morning at Meeriyabedda of the Koslanda police area in Haldummulla.

Disaster Management Center Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said 10 bodies out of missing persons have been unearthed.

7 line-rooms comprised of 120 households and two government houses which were situated in 100 acres land were subjected to the landslide this morning.

Police said a Devalaya which was located adjacent to the two government houses was also buried in the land slide. The chief priest of the Devalaya is also among dead.

Several residents who injured in the disaster are receiving treatment at Koslanda hospital. At the same time, several witnesses to the disaster described the catastrophe to our news team.

Superintendent of Ampitikanda Tea Estate Dinusha Kapukotuwa told our news team that workers of his estate belonging to Maskeliya Plantation Company were living in the ill-fated line-rooms.

He also said it is difficult to find the details of the missing persons as the office in which their records had been kept was also buried in the landslide.

The Disaster Management Center also said many children have escaped death as they had set off for school at the time of the deadly landslide.

The Center also said that parents of certain children are missing, and such children have now been kept in temporary welfare centers set up at Koslanda Tamil School and Punagala Number one Tamil School.

Meanwhile Bandarawela Circuit Education Director Ariyadasa Rathnayake said that 10 schools in the affected area of Haldummulla were closed until next Monday.

The Disaster Management Center stated that 300 persons are missing following a landslide that occurred around 7.30 this morning at Meeriyabedda in Haldummulla.

Disaster Management Center Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said 10 bodies have been recoevered so far.

Meanwhile Disaster management officials requested the public not to visit Meeriyabedda as the area is prone to further landslides.

A row of line houses in the Haldemulla area in Badulla have been damaged due to a landslide this morning and 2 bodies have been recovered buried under the rubble.

The Disaster Management Centre said that the rescue operations are underway with the help of the army and the police.
