Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma said that Commonwealth is ready to deploy its monitors to observe future elections in Sri Lanka

He also said that the Sri Lankan government and the Election Commissioner endorsed the Commonwealth proposal.

The Commonwealth Secretary General who is in the island for a 5-day visit participated in a media briefing this morning.

He told the media that he had discussions with the election commissioner in holding free and fair elections in the future.

At the same time, Sharma said the election commissioner agreed to allow local election monitors to participate in vote counting process in the future elections.

Referring to his visit to the North, Sharma said the Sri Lankan government has taken several steps for a remarkable development of its infrastructure facilities.

Sharma also said that the infrastructure would also help create a conducive environment for reconciliation.
