Haldummulla Divisional Secretary Indra Dissanayake said the residents of Meeriyabedda were informed to evacuate after a crack of a road in the neighborhood was observed yesterday.

However residents of Meeriyabedda said they did not receive such a warning message, and lamented the disaster could have been avoided had the authorities educated them of such a disaster in advance.

When our news team contacted National Building Research Institute’s Senior Geologist Gamini Jayatissa said his institute had educated the relevant authorities of an imminent disaster beforehand.

However Haldummulla Divisional Secretary Indra Dissanayake said that Grama Seva Officers and Disaster Management officers went door to door and informed them to evacuate from their houses yesterday.

She said the residents were getting ready to evacuate from their houses this morning.

However, the residents of Meeriyabedda reject the Divisional Secretary’s claim.
