Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera says that it is difficult to believe that anyone from the Meeriya-badda village, except those who left to school or to work at the estate could have survived the landslide.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated that due to adverse weather, the rescue operations have been temporarily suspended.

The operations will recommence tomorrow

The minister further noted that the hills which are behind the landslide have also started slipping; therefore rescue operations have been hindered.

500 security personnel have been engaged in rescue operations. The Army media director Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera elaborated further.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Air force said that they have a helicopter prepared to send for assistance whenever required.
